“Lent stands for something specific. It tells the story of God’s grace and how it was specifically shown. It tells the story of redemption and how it was accomplished… Before Christ Jesus can be a guide and example He must be a Redeemer, a Savior. And Lent is the appropriate time of all times for presenting this truth.”

The Ten Commandments by Robert Golladay
The Ten Commandments by Robert Golladay

“The message of the Law is needed in our congregations today as much as ever. Even where church attendance is gratifying, spiritual life is often on a rather low spiritual and moral plane… The range of topics treated in these sermons is virtually extensive with the spiritual needs and duties of our people. Subjects… likely to result in resentment upon the part of some of the hearers, are boldly dealt with from the standpoint of one who is accustomed to declaring: ‘Thus saith the Lord.’” – From the Introduction by C. B. Gohdes

Our Festivals in Church and State by Robert Golladay
Our Festivals in Church and State by Robert Golladay

“The Fourth of July! Independence Day! One hundred and fifty-two years ago today there took place in history one of those events the like of which takes place only once in five hundred or a thousand years; the promulgation of that immortal Declaration of Independence. This document, up to its time, was the ripest fruit of all that had yet been thought along the line of human liberty.

The Light in the Window by Robert Golladay
The Light in the Window by Robert Golladay

“The funeral sermon is one of the most difficult sermons to prepare and deliver. To begin with, there is an emotional strain which is felt by preacher and hearers alike. Jesus was ever and anon saying: “I have compassion.” He felt other people’s sorrows. He made their burdens His own. When He stood with the bereaved family in Bethany, hard by the grave of Lazarus, He wept. If we do not feel other people’s sorrows, if their burdens do not become in some measure our own, we are not ministers after Jesus’ heart, and we can never render our best service. A true ministry is a sacrificial ministry. This is costly business. It wears at the very source of life. But any true minister is willing, glad to pay the price.” — Robert Golladay

The Lord's Prayer by Robert Golladay
The Lord's Prayer by Robert Golladay

“There are two general ways of looking at God; from the point of view of Sinai, or as He is revealed to us on Calvary. If we know God only, or chiefly, as He is revealed to us in the lights and shadows, the thunderings and threatenings, of Sinai, He will appear to us rather stern and austere, — a Lawgiver and Judge.

[B36] The Apostles' Creed: Life Everlasting
[B36] The Apostles' Creed: Life Everlasting

Eternal life contains a great deal more than the two words, life plus eternity. Eternal life is not merely endless existence. It means endless life in its highest possible state of existence. It means that all that is piecemeal and temporary has passed away forever. It means that the absolutely perfect has come, that life has reached its highest altitude. It means that all the fulness and richness that this human vessel can receive of the goodness of God has been made ours.

[B35] The Apostles' Creed: Eternal Death
[B35] The Apostles' Creed: Eternal Death

Eternal death [is not] the eternal extinction of life, or the cessation of conscious existence. There are those who hold that in the future world the soul of the wicked shall die, just as the body does here, — that the time comes, sooner or later, when the soul ceases to act, to feel, to be; and that it will never be restored. This they consider eternal punishment by way of deprivation. It is the loss of the supreme good. This is not a doctrine of Scripture, it is found alone in the imagination of men.

[B34] The Apostles' Creed: The Resurrection of the Body

The Christian faith is not simply that there is to be a continuity of human life, but that the body is to be raised from the dead, reunited with its animating, controlling spirit; and thus, as a complete human being, not as soul only, but body and soul; continue to live on forever after the great awakening.

[B33] The Apostles' Creed: The Forgiveness of Sins
[B33] The Apostles' Creed: The Forgiveness of Sins

Faith, and faith alone, appropriates forgiveness. God loved the world, and gave His Son, that whosoever believeth in this Son, and the work He did, as the result of which He is able to forgive, shall not perish, but have everlasting life. We are justified, that means forgiven, and adopted into the family of God’s children by faith alone. Let us thank God that there is such a certain ground of forgiveness.
